Dancing Together
I have a client, I’ll call him Christophe. I learn so much from this guy. Pity that he lives nowhere near me, because Christophe is truly an exemplar in resilience, love, curiosity. He is also so intelligent, funny, quirky.
And like me, Christophe also looooooooooves to dance.
Christophe’s Dilemma:
Christophe is really hard on himself. So, so hard on himself. He knows it but sometimes can’t pull himself out of a slump without some help from friends, colleagues, family, me.
The Importance of Community
“We’re not here on Earth to dance alone.” That is one of my refrains. We have community! Blessed, blessed communities.
Where did this mentality come from that we have to go it alone?
Sometimes we need help shifting states. Sometimes we need help in other areas of our lives. Sometimes we just need a reminder that we are not alone. It’s normal and healthy to acknowledge when we need help.
Here is What I Said to Him:
The love and grace and understanding we have for other people? We need to extend it to ourselves as well!
That’s really all I said to him. It was what Christophe needed to hear; it was what shifted him out of the self-induced slump he was starting to find himself in. Distilling complexity into simplicity can be very powerful.
Here is What Christophe Said to Me:
Christophe said that Psalm 116 from the Old Testament of the Bible really speaks to him and comforts him. Explaining that Psalm 116 is about seeking God’s protection and love in prayer, Christophe said that God listens to our supplications even if our own impulses, doubts and imperfections plague us,
Christophe told me that he appreciates me because I help him remember to bring God into his life in the here and now, even when I am not talking about God or religion. I told Christophe that I appreciate him for the same reason. Christophe enriches my life. My clients enrich my life and bring me joy through their existence and interactions with me. Thank you, Christophe.
Photo Metaphors
The photo at the bottom of this post represents Christophe’s life path. (I know, Christophe, you are laughing but not laughing.) It is scenic but it is quite a climb.
The “Featured Image” pic — the one that you clicked on to get to this post — that photo represents my life path. The views are stunning and the journey is interesting and rich, but I don’t get to know what is around the next bend. Ever.
