My 7 year-old son was having intense behavioral issues for several years after his mother and I divorced. He was increasingly oppositional, attention-seeking and rebellious.

My ex and I were both raised in the Conservative tradition but are no longer observant. After speaking with me several times and then meeting my son, Nina recommended that I enroll him in Hebrew school and also that we should start attending services together. Nina, mind you, is not Jewish. I was surprised and my ex was astounded, but we figured, “Hey, it can’t hurt.”

It didn’t hurt, it was a miracle! After the very first day of Hebrew school when I went to pick my son up in front of the bimah, I asked him, “How was it?” My son had no words. He just smiled and gave me the biggest hug of my life. I tell you, within a few weeks of attending temple and Hebrew school my son’s behavior drastically improved. Several months later and my son is a different kid. Step aside, Zizmor, there’s a new doc in town.
